A Super Bowl thought from Nutritional expert, Debbie Powers

Last Sunday 114.5 million people watched the Super Bowl. This number made this sporting event the most watched television program in history. It topped the 2014 Super Bowl, which had previously surpassed the 2012 Super Bowl. In fact, of the top eight most-watched shows in history, seven are Super Bowl games. The only exception is the 1983 series finale of M*A*S*H. Americans love their football. In fact, they love to watch all sports. While munching on wings and chips, they marvel at the athletes’ speed, strength, and agility. They applaud athletes’ dedication and commitment to physical excellence.
These numbers got me thinking……what if that large number of people participated in a sport or fitness activity rather than merely watched?  Or, to be more realistic, what if only half that number were physically active on a regular basis?  What if spectators embraced the same dedication and commitment to physical excellence as the athletes they worship?  Would we no longer be the fattest industrialized country in the world?  (Oh wait, we recently dropped to number two----behind Mexico).  Diabetes rates, health care costs, and heart attacks would plummet if people moved more than they sat and watched.  One doesn’t have to be a gifted athlete to move his or her body!  Unfortunately the number of sedentary viewers remains large…..and, as a result, people are getting larger.

New York Attorney General Targets Supplements at Major Retailers

The New York State attorney general’s office accused four major retailers on Monday of selling fraudulent and potentially dangerous herbal supplements and demanded that they remove the products from their shelves.
The authorities said they had conducted tests on top-selling store brands of herbal supplements at four national retailers — GNC, Target, Walgreens and Walmart — and found that four out of five of the products did not contain any of the herbs on their labels. The tests showed that pills labeled medicinal herbs often contained little more than cheap fillers like powdered rice, asparagus and houseplants, and in some cases substances that could be dangerous to those with allergies.    CLICK Links to READ more.
